Bungay and Beccles Taekwondo Clubs Winter Seminar Grading

Students from both Bungay and Beccles Taekwondo Clubs recently took part in their annual winter grading/seminar hosted at Bungay High School. A complete range of the belt grades took part, from white belt to black tag, and a few Black belts who joined the seminar.

The ages of the students taking part were from 5 upwards, all being tested on the progression of their Taekwondo skills and techniques including: punching, kicking, blocking, patterns, self-defence, sparring and some Korean terminology. The senior students also have to do destruction which is the breaking of plastic boards with specific hand and foot techniques.

GTUK Examiner Mr Steve King 6th Degree from Wellingborough was very impressed with the standards achieved by both clubs and issued 100% pass rate.

Training is now underway for the upcoming Regional and National tournaments in February and April, the next club gradings will be at the end of March.

Both clubs are always ready to welcome new students of all ages and abilities to come and try this great martial art, ideal for families to take part in, as many parents train alongside their children.

Bungay train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and a special class on Wednesday for Bungay High School students.

Beccles train on Mondays and Thursdays at the Beccles Sports Centre, but also teach during the Wednesday enrichments sessions at the Beccles Free School.

Tremendous Taekwondo Trio!

Black-Belts-2015

Tremendous Taekwondo Trio!

There are 3 new Black Belts for Bungay Taekwondo Club which trains in Hall 1 of the High School on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening and 2 of them attend Bungay High School as students as well.

Adam Fuller (Year 7) and Jacob Burden (Year 8) completed a gruelling 4 hour examination at the weekend in order to be awarded their Black belts in the Olympic Martial Art of Taekwondo.  They had to perform 3 patterns, 3 lots of sparring and set sparring, special techniques and Korean theory as well as submit a 15 page thesis all in front of senior instructors in the GTUK including Grand Master Oldham and Master Aucello.  Both boys performed superbly and said that it was an ‘emotional rollercoaster’ but also the best experience ever!

The 3rd student to achieve the coveted Dan grading was Jacobs Mum, Amanda Linford (aged 41), who has started training after watching her sons train and thought that she might as well have a go as well, after all she loved watching Bruce Lee films as a young girl.  She had to do the same as the boys, but also smash 2” of wood with a side kick and 1” of wood with a palm strike and said that it was “an amazing, if slightly terrifying day as she never thought that she would be able to get a black belt!

Perhaps you would like to train towards getting your black belt so please check out the details on this website or contact the school for further details.

John Gillett completed his marathon walk to raise money for the Stroke association

Mr Gillett’s Father John Gillett (aged 72) completed his marathon walk (26.2 miles) on Tuesday accompanied by Michaela Gillett (aged 43) to raise money for the Stroke association and was thrilled that 2 members of Lowestoft Stroke group came out to meet him for lunch at the Shadingfield Fox.

He was also delighted that Jemma the Landlady would not let him or my wife Mickey pay for their lunch as they were doing this huge walk for a charity close to her heart.

Ray and Kate Oubridge greeted John and Mickey for dinner to offer support at mile 15 of the gruelling trek,  which acted as the half way point having started from The Harbour Inn in Southwold at 8.30 am.  The tenacious pair completed the walk at 5.30 pm when the reached The Artichoke in Broome making it one of the longest pub crawls ever!

John Gillett suffered a massive stroke in 2006 loosing mobility, speech and dexterity but glad not to have lost his life.  He has walked his way back to fitness from a hospital bed and each year has done a walk to raise funds for the Stroke Association whom he is a key member of the Warwick and Leamington Spa branch.

He had set his sights on the marathon distance having supported his Son Clinton Gillett and Daughter in Law with their 10 marathons over the last few years.

Michaela wrote John a training programme, plotted the route and walked the distance in order to support and guide as John still has very limited feeling all down his right hand side.  He has spent the last 6 months walking regularly in all weathers to train for the arduous distance.

So far he has raised nearly £2000 for the charity and aims to raise much more whilst he is still fit and able.

If you are able to contribute then please send cheques made payable to the Stroke Association to Clinton Gillett at Bungay High School.
