Bungay Taekwondo Club decided to raise funds for this year’s fantastic Sport Relief by donating all their lesson fees to the worthy cause and having a bit of fun along the way.

One of the events that caused a big bang was the balloon burst where students competed to see who could pop their balloon in the least amount of strikes whilst it was taped to a kick shield.  The winner was Instructors Assistant Richard Baylis who struck lucky with his very first round house kick and caused a massive pop for charity.

Clinton Gillett the club instructor and assistant Headteacher at Bungay High School where the club trains three times a week said “Taekwondo is world renown for its kicking techniques so this seemed like a really good way to develop accuracy and have a few laughs along the way, some students took 20 kicks to burst the slippery balloons but kept smiling all the way”

The Club raised over £100 from the weeks lessons which will go towards charities in the UK and abroad as part of this year’s headline fundraising event.

New Bungay Black Belt: Eleanor Kay

Eleanor

After 4 years of training and a gruelling 7 hour examination held in Coventry over the weekend Eleanor Kay (aged 17) from Bungay Taekwondo Club achieved a major life aim by passing her black belt.

Eleanor performed superbly in front of Grand Master Oldham and various other senior Dan grades in order to be awarded his highly coveted black belt. She had to perform patterns, demonstrate techniques, perform free sparring and set sparring techniques, answer theory questions and submit a written thesis all topped off by performing various power destruction techniques through wood which required a great deal of practice as well as excellent technique and focus?

By passing her grading it takes the black belt tally at the club to 31 since it opened in 2003 and Clinton Gillett said, “Eleanor smashed everything and demonstrated great determination and dedication, she is a humble and respectful student, but at the same time incredibly approachable and friendly to all other members of the club”.

The club always needs new recruits who want to get their black belt in this Olympic Martial Art so please pop along to Bungay High School on Tuesday or Thursday from 7pm or check out the website  www.bungay-taekwondo.co.uk

Bungay and Beccles Taekwondo Clubs Winter Seminar Grading

Students from both Bungay and Beccles Taekwondo Clubs recently took part in their annual winter grading/seminar hosted at Bungay High School. A complete range of the belt grades took part, from white belt to black tag, and a few Black belts who joined the seminar.

The ages of the students taking part were from 5 upwards, all being tested on the progression of their Taekwondo skills and techniques including: punching, kicking, blocking, patterns, self-defence, sparring and some Korean terminology. The senior students also have to do destruction which is the breaking of plastic boards with specific hand and foot techniques.

GTUK Examiner Mr Steve King 6th Degree from Wellingborough was very impressed with the standards achieved by both clubs and issued 100% pass rate.

Training is now underway for the upcoming Regional and National tournaments in February and April, the next club gradings will be at the end of March.

Both clubs are always ready to welcome new students of all ages and abilities to come and try this great martial art, ideal for families to take part in, as many parents train alongside their children.

Bungay train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and a special class on Wednesday for Bungay High School students.

Beccles train on Mondays and Thursdays at the Beccles Sports Centre, but also teach during the Wednesday enrichments sessions at the Beccles Free School.
