Bungay Taekwondo Club at British Individual Championships April 2010

Bungay Taekwon-do club has had another great tournament success in 2010. 16 students from the club travelled the 180 miles to Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire for the GTUK National Championships and gained a wide range of medals in all divisions, the long day began at 5am and students returned for 10.30pm bruised and battered but bright with success.

Bungay achieved 14 medals including 6 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze. The family orientated club once again swept up with several family members succeeding during the hectic and challenging days events Suzi Bedingfield (gold veteran patterns), Logan Bedingfield (gold 3rd-1st kup under 65kg sparring) and Nidge Bedingfield (silver veteran sparring and patterns), whilst Sophie Akerman (gold 3rd-1st kup junior patterns and silver sparring) and Jenna Akerman (gold 3rd-1st kup junior sparring and bronze patterns) also did well especially as they are in the same division.

Other winners were Will Everson (gold 6th-4th kup junior sparring), Edward Parker-Jervis (silver 6th-4th kup junior patterns) and Adam Sloan (silver 3rd-1st kup junior patterns). Special mentions have to be made about Oliver Baylis (gold 10th-7th kup junior sparring) and Reece Jordan (silver 10th-7th kup junior sparring and patterns) as this was their 1st competition and they travel to Bungay from Beccles to train every week demonstrating great commitment and diligence. Tom Raven competed really well but narrowly missed out on the medals.

The black belts of the club worked tirelessly throughout the day refereeing and guiding but did not achieve medals which was a real shame, Lianne Hatcher won several patterns rounds but came up against a member of the England squad and was knocked out unfortunately, Martin Sloan (assistant instructor) fought hard but missed out in the judging and the club instructor Clinton Gillett came 6th in the patterns and 4th in the sparring again meeting an England squad member in the semi final.

The club is recruiting for new students at the moment so if you want to get fit for the summer come along to the high school on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7pm or contact Clinton Gillett on 01986 892140 for further details. The youngest students in the club are 6 years old and there is no upper age limit.

Bungay Taekwondo Wicked Weekend! – New Black Belts & British Regional Finals 2009

November 2009

New Black Belts at Bungay Taekwon-do Club

GTUK British Regional Finals 2009

Wicked Weekend!

Bungay Taekwon-do club has had a superb series of successes over the weekend, on Saturday the GTUK black belt grading took place in Coventry and Clinton Gillett (37) the club instructor was promoted to International 4th Degree, which means amongst other responsibilities he gets to wear the black strips down his dobok, whilst Martin Sloan (40) and Lianne Hatcher (18) the club assistants gained their 2nd Degrees, the highest students ever taught by Clinton so far!

Claire Sloan (38), Fiona Larter (37) and Amy Barker (19) all gained their coveted black belts after a gruelling examination involving patterns, sparring and set sparring, self defence, destruction, theory and thesis submissions.

Then on Sunday the club participated in the GTUK Regions’ Tournament in Stratford-Upon-Avon and came away with a fantastic 11 medals and a 3rd place trophy!

Stars of the show included Nidge Bedingfield (55) gaining the gold for veteran destruction and Edward Parker-Jervis (14) winning gold in his sparring division.

George Crickmore (15) won silver for sparring and patterns, George Attwood (19) won silver for sparring, Tom Raven (15) earned a bronze in his sparring group and Sue Bedingfield (48) gained a bronze for her patterns.

Martin Sloan won bronze for veteran black belt patterns and sparring and Clinton Gillett gained silver for black belt sparring and bronze for patterns.

The scores from each region were calculated and it meant that the Eastern region came 3rd overall in Great Britain, beaten only by Scotland in 1st place and the North West in 2nd which is a fantastic achievement considering population densities.

Sophie and Jenna Akerman, Amy Barker, Lianne Hatcher and Fiona Larter all competed superbly but missed out on medals, however they helped us greatly with spirit and comradeship.

The club is currently getting ready for the last grading of the year and the presentation party for student of the year awards but if you want to come along and see us train then we always welcome anyone along.

The youngest students training at the moment are just 6 years old and with the London Olympics in 2012 coming along there is real scope to train to compete.

The club trains at Bungay High School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm with an extra curricular session provided for free to students at the High School on Wednesdays.

Competitors from Bungay Taekwondo-do club based at Bungay High School got up at 5am and travelled to Stratford Upon Avon in the heart of England in order to compete at the largest ever GTUK event and standards and competition were really high, especially as BBC3 were present and filming for a forthcoming documentary.

Fiona Larter (37) once again proved her dominance in the ladies sparring event and achieved a thoroughly deserved gold medal, the 3rd year in a row!

Nidge Bedingfield (aged 54) also achieved gold in the Veteran Male sparring section as well as a bronze for Patterns, his wife Sue (aged 48) won double silver medals whilst their youngest son Kal (aged 12) achieved a great bronze for sparring in a huge junior category.

George Crickmore (aged 14) continued his medal haul of the season with a bronze for Sparring and a thoroughly deserved silver for patterns.

Freddy Hoffman (aged 15) won a terrific bronze medal for sparring in his first ever GTUK competition.

Other students from the club were not quite as successful but did especially well in light of the standards on show, Jenna Akerman (12) came 4th in the junior patterns, Mark Porter (28) came 4th in a tough male sparring section whilst Sophie Akerman (12) won several rounds in the junior sparring section but missed out on the medals.

Clinton Gillett the club instructor and Director of Design Technology at the High School said “National standards seem to be getting better every year and we are raising our game accordingly, it was a shame that many others in the club were unable to travel due to other commitments as the medal tally could have been higher!”

Now is a great time to get fit for summer so if you would like to see the club train or have a go at this Olympic martial art come along to the high school on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7pm or contact Clinton Gillett on 07970 664965 for further details.
